  44. Microsoft(R) NetMeeting(TM) enables real-time audio, video, and data 
  45. communication over the Internet. 
  46.  
  47. In order to use Microsoft NetMeeting, you must have the following 
  48. configuration:
  49.  
  50. - Microsoft Windows(R) 95
  51. - At least a 486/66 processor with 8 megabytes of RAM 
  52.   (Pentium with 12 MB of RAM recommended)
  53.  
  54.     --or--

  56. - Microsoft Windows NT(R) version 4.0
  57. - At least a 486/66 processor with 16 megabytes of RAM 
  58. - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 required to enable sharing 
  59.   applications on Windows NT

  62.   Important Notes
  63.   * NetMeeting does not run on Windows version 3.1. 
  64.  
  65.   * It is strongly recommended that all NetMeeting users upgrade to 
  66.     NetMeeting 2.0 to avoid incompatibility issues.
  67.  
  68.   * It is strongly recommended that you uninstall earlier beta versions 
  69.     of Microsoft NetMeeting before installing NetMeeting 2.0.
  70.  
  71. - NetMeeting works best with a fast Internet connection (a 28.8-baud or 
  72.   faster modem or a local area network).
  73.  
  74. - To use the audio features of NetMeeting, you need a sound card, 
  75.   speakers, and a microphone.
  76.  
  77. - To use the video features of NetMeeting, you need either a video-
  78.   capture card and camera or a video camera that connects through your 
  79.   computer's parallel (printer) port. You will not be able to send video 
  80.   on some computers with a processor slower than a Pentium.
  81.  
  82.   Computers with a bidirectional (ECP or EPP) parallel port will perform 
  83.   noticeably better with parallel port video cameras than computers with 
  84.   a unidirectional parallel port.
  85.  
  86.   Cameras that connect to a video-capture card will use less of your 
  87.   computer's processor than cameras that connect through your computer's 
  88.   parallel port. It is recommended that you not use a color parallel port 
  89.   camera unless your computer is at least a Pentium 133.
  90.  
  91. - The application-sharing feature may not perform well while you are using 
  92.   audio and video and are connected over a slow connection. Additionally, 
  93.   you might experience "choppy" audio while using video.
  94.  
  95.   The default setting for video over a 28.8-baud modem connection is low 
  96.   quality. To change this setting, click the Tools menu, click Options, 
  97.   click the Video tab, and then change the Video Quality option.
  98.  
  99. - Windows NT users will be able to share applications if they have 
  100.   installed Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0. 
  101.  
  102. - If you are unable to use some of NetMeeting's features, there may be 
  103.   a problem with your installation of NetMeeting.  Uninstall NetMeeting,
  104.   download the latest version, and try again.
  105.  
  106. - If NetMeeting is installed in a directory with a path that contains 
  107.   extended characters, application sharing might not work.
  108.

  115. To run Microsoft NetMeeting
  116. ---------------------------
  117. 1. After installation, if a dialog box appears asking if you want to 
  118.    restart your computer, click Yes.
  119.  
  120. 2. Start Microsoft NetMeeting as follows:
  121.    Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click 
  122.    Microsoft NetMeeting.
  123.  
  124. 3. When you open NetMeeting for the first time, a wizard appears 
  125.    that helps you get ready to use NetMeeting. If you cancel this 
  126.    wizard, you will not be able to use NetMeeting.

  129. To uninstall Microsoft NetMeeting
  130. ---------------------------------
  131. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  132.  
  133. 2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft NetMeeting, and then 
  134.    click Add/Remove.
  135.  
  136. 3. If a dialog box appears asking if you want to restart your computer, 
  137.    click Yes.
  138.  
  139. Warnings and Known Bugs
  140. -----------------------
  141. - If you uninstall Windows NT Service Pack 3 after installing 
  142.   NetMeeting 2.0, you will receive an error message when you restart 
  143.   your computer. To prevent this, carry out the following steps:
  144.  
  145.   1. Close the error message window.
  146.  
  147.   2. Click Cancel in the Display Property Dialog
  148.  
  149.   3. In Control Panel, click the Devices icon.
  150.  
  151.   4. Click mnmdd, and then click the Startup button.
  152.  
  153.   5. Change the Startup Type from System to Disabled, and then click OK.
  154.  
  155.   6. Restart your computer so the change can take effect.

  158. USING MICROSOFT NETMEETING
  159. ==========================
  160.  
  161. - Microsoft NetMeeting now includes support for the H.323 audio and video 
  162.   conferencing standard. NetMeeting can be used to place calls to and receive 
  163.   calls from products that are H.323 compatible, including the Intel Internet 
  164.   Video Phone. With appropriate equipment and services that are currently under
  165.   development by third parties, NetMeeting can place a telephone call using an
  166.   H.323 gateway.

  168. - Microsoft maintains the following User Location Servers on the Internet:
  169.  
  170.     ils.microsoft.com
  171.     ils1.microsoft.com
  172.     ils2.microsoft.com
  173.     ils3.microsoft.com
  174.     ils4.microsoft.com
  175.     ils5.microsoft.com
  176.  
  177.     You can use one of these even if it does not appear in the list of servers
  178.     in the wizard.
  179.  
  180.     Note
  181.     * You will not be able to use these servers to locate 
  182.       people on the Internet if you connect to the Internet 
  183.       through a proxy server that does not support Remote
  184.       WinSock. 
  185.  
  186. - Audio and video work only over TCP/IP and with one other person at a time. 
  187.   You can use all other features with more than one other person over TCP/IP, 
  188.   modems, and IPX.
  189.  
  190. - NetMeeting supports meetings of up to 32 people. In addition, you can be 
  191.   connected to only one other person with audio and video at a time. Only 
  192.   three people at a time can share applications running on their computers. 
  193.  
  194.   The total number of people who can successfully participate in your meeting 
  195.   will vary based on available network bandwidth and the speed of the 
  196.   participants' computers.
  197.  
  198. - Some activities cause large amounts of data to be sent between the computers 
  199.   in your meeting (for example, speaking and sharing several applications while 
  200.   transferring a large file). In extreme cases, this might cause computers in 
  201.   the meeting to become very slow. To remedy this, stop one or more of the 
  202.   meeting activities.
  203.  
  204. - If you try to make a TCP/IP call on your local area network or through a proxy 
  205.   server and MSN or Dial-Up Networking displays a connection dialog box, you can 
  206.   disable this by double-clicking the Internet icon in Control Panel and then 
  207.   making sure that Auto-Dial is not selected.
  208.  
  209. - Sharing of DirectX, OpenGL, MS-DOS(R), and graphics-intensive games and AVIs 
  210.   does not work well and is not supported. 
  211.  
  212. - If different computers have different screen resolutions during a meeting, 
  213.   the shared windows can be as large as the highest resolution desktop allows. 
  214.   Users with lower resolution desktops must scroll to view windows that don't 
  215.   fit their screens.
  216.  
  217. - You must have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack and Windows sockets interface to use 
  218.   NetMeeting with TCP/IP. NetMeeting has been tested with the 32-bit TCP/IP 
  219.   and Windows sockets bu
